How to Can Pumpkin

Learning to Can Pumpkin — and Carrying on a Family Tradition

I’m so thankful I found this YouTube video on how to can pumpkin! There’s something about learning new skills that connects me right back to my roots.

Growing up, my family did a lot of canning — mostly stewed tomatoes, beets, corn, salmon, sucker fish, venison (for beef and noodles, of course), pickles, and maybe even carrots. Those jars lined up on the shelves weren’t just food — they were a sign of hard work, care, and love. Each one meant we’d have something good to enjoy long after the harvest was over.

Now, as I learn to can things myself, I realize how special that legacy is. Canning isn’t just about preserving food — it’s about preserving moments, memories, and a way of life that slows things down and reminds us to be grateful for what we have.

Pumpkin feels like the perfect new addition to my shelves. I love knowing that when the weather turns cold, I’ll have something wholesome and homemade ready to go — whether it’s for a creamy soup, a loaf of pumpkin bread, or just a little something extra special.

Learning to can pumpkin last week has me thinking about my family and how much those traditions shaped me. I may not can the exact same things they did, but I’m carrying on the heart of it — being intentional, resourceful, and thankful for simple, beautiful ways to care for my family.

🍂 Here’s to keeping traditions alive, learning new skills, and filling our shelves — and our hearts — with the goodness of the season.

What traditions do you carry on?
